Lupin season is such a classic backdrop for photos. The fields are filled with beautiful shades of purples, pinks, and whites, creating a dreamy backdrop that feels straight out of a storybook. If you've booked a Lupin Mini Session with me, you may be wondering what to wear and how to prepare.

The good news is that choosing outfits for lupin photos does not have to be complicated. A little planning can go a long way toward creating timeless images you'll love for years to come.

Choose Colours That Complement the Flowers

When it comes to outfit colours, you can never go wrong with neutral tones. Cream, beige, tan, white, light grey, and soft earth tones photograph beautifully in lupin fields. These colours help keep the focus on you while allowing the flowers to add natural colour to your images.

If you're planning photos with a partner or family, try coordinating rather than matching. Wearing identical outfits can sometimes look less natural in photographs. Instead, choose colours that work together while still allowing each person's personality to shine through.

If you would like a little more colour in your outfit, consider soft pastel shades. Light pinks, dusty mauves, lavender tones, and soft purples pair beautifully with the lupins while still standing out from the scenery. These colours create a soft, romantic look that works especially well during golden hour.

Avoid bright neon colours whenever possible. These tones can pull attention away from your faces and may clash with the natural colours found in the field.

Dresses Are Lovely, But They're Not Required

One of the most common questions I receive is whether clients should wear a dress for these sessions. The answer is simple: wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, if you feel uncomfortable in your clothing it will show in the photos, and we don't want that!

Flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they add movement and softness to images. A long dress can create a timeless and elegant look, especially when there is a light breeze. However, dresses are absolutely not required.

A good pair of jeans paired with a nice shirt can look just as amazing. In fact, some of my favourite sessions have featured simple, casual outfits that felt authentic to the people wearing them.

The goal is not to dress like someone else. The goal is to feel like yourself. When you feel comfortable in your clothing, that confidence naturally comes through in your photographs.

Think About Comfort and Practicality

While lupin fields are beautiful, they are still outdoor locations. Nova Scotia weather can be unpredictable, and comfort should always be part of your planning process. Before your session, consider how much walking you may need to do. Choose footwear that allows you to move comfortably through uneven ground. You may want to bring a pair of comfortable shoes for walking and change into dressier footwear once we arrive at the photo location.

Layers can also be helpful. Even warm days can become cool during evening sessions, especially near the coast. A light cardigan, denim jacket, or neutral sweater can be useful if temperatures drop unexpectedly.

Most importantly, choose clothing that allows you to move freely. You'll be walking, standing, sitting, and interacting naturally throughout the session. Comfortable clothing helps create relaxed and genuine photographs.

A Quick Note About Ticks

As beautiful as Nova Scotia is, our tick population has increased significantly over the past few years. Because many lupin fields are in around tall grassy areas, I recommend taking a few simple precautions before and after your session.

If possible, consider wearing clothing that provides a little more coverage. Longer pants, high socks and closed-toe shoes can help reduce exposure while still looking great in photos. I also recommend bringing insect repellent and applying it before your session if you are comfortable doing so.

Once you return home, take a few minutes to thoroughly check yourself, your children, and your pets if they attended the session. A quick tick check is always worth the extra peace of mind.

The Most Important Thing You Can Wear

At the end of the day, the best outfit is one that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and happy.

Your session is about capturing genuine moments and creating memories. The clothing you choose should support that experience, not create stress.

Whether you arrive in a flowing dress, your favourite pair of jeans, or a carefully coordinated family outfit, the goal remains the same. We want photographs that feel natural, beautiful, and true to you.

I cannot wait to photograph this year's Lupin Mini Sessions and capture some beautiful memories among one of Nova Scotia's most stunning seasonal backdrops. If you have any questions about outfit choices before your session, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm always happy to help.
